Between Two Homes: The LGBTQ+ Refugees America Left Behind” chronicles the story of LGBTQ+ individuals from Iran, where homosexuality is punishable by death, who have been forced to flee their homes to find safety in the United States. These Iranians have found themselves stranded in transit for years due to the Trump Administration’s policies beginning with the “travel ban,” often facing the same discrimination and threats to their safety as they did in Iran.

This story was the culmination of over a year of independent investigative reporting across the United States, Canada, and Turkey, where I hoped to illuminate the conditions of LGBTQ+ refugees forced to remain in Turkey.

This film was published across NowThis’ social video platforms and made possible with the financial support of the International Center for Journalists. It went on to be nominated for a 2020 GLAAD Media Award for “Outstanding Digital Journalism — Video or Multimedia.”
